GLOBAL AGENDA SUMMIT CONCLUDES WITH CALL FOR 'FUNDAMENTAL REBOOT'

By Muin Abdul Majid

DUBAI, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The inaugural Summit on the Global Agenda
concluded here Sunday with an assertion that the world needs to examine basic
operating systems that drive its economies, markets and societies.

The international community should also aim for a "fundamental reboot" to
establish a fresh platform based on renewed confidence and trust, and on
sustainability, responsibility and ethical principles.

This overarching message was delivered by 700 of the world's top thought
leaders from business, government, academia and civil society at the end of the
three-day gathering convened by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in partnership
with the government of Dubai.

"This summit has heightened our appreciation of the urgency and necessity
to address global challenges in an integrated way and what needs to be done to
improve the state of the world," said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive
chairman of the WEF.

"It has enhanced our shared understanding of the state of the world and the
complexities of the issues," he added.

According to the organisers, participants from over 60 countries had
engaged in intense brainstorming on the most pressing global issues and risks,
including how to shape the post-crisis international financial system.

Leading experts tackled some of the key issues facing the world, from
financial insecurity to global warming and from the future of the Internet to
water security.

Summit co-chair Mohamed Alabbar, member of the Dubai Executive Council and
Emaar Properties chairman, described the event as "among the most path-breaking
initiatives undertaken by the modern world".

"As the world's largest brainstorming event, it is not merely about setting
agendas; it is about laying the groundwork towards practical solutions," he
said, expressing confidence that deliberations of the Dubai summit would be of
immense value to the people of the world for the long term.

Inputs from the summit will be taken forward to WEF's 2009 Annual Meeting
which will take place in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from Jan 28 to Feb 1
under the theme "Shaping the Post-Crisis World".

Dubai will host next year's Summit on the Global Agenda from Oct 4 to
6.
