BBC Symphony Orchestra to Perform at Katara Opera House

Doha, September 29 (QNA) - To celebrate Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, the world renowned BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Katara Opera House on the 30 September and the 1 October. The London based BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform the very best of British classical music by three composers very closely associated with the orchestra's history. Conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, the repertoire will include Edward Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance #1, Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Symphony No 2. All three composers reflect the British landscape they knew well in their musical masterpieces. With the BBC Symphony Orchestra having played a central role at the heart of British musical life since its inception in 1930, these British composers have always remained close to the orchestra's identity. Paul Hughes, General Manager, BBC Symphony Orchestra says: "The opportunity to visit Qatar for the first time, and being part of the exciting Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture is a great honour for the BBCSO. We look forward to new audiences and hope this will be just the beginning of a long relationship between the orchestra and the people of Qatar." Hamad Al-Eida, spokesperson for Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming the BBC Symphony Orchestra to Doha as part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture. The fact that 2013 makes it Britten's 100th anniversary, makes this visit even more special. This event is a true testament of the cultural diplomacy that the Year of Culture has nurtured; by creating long lasting relationships for individuals and institutions alike and the BBC Symphony Orchestra's first visit to Qatar reflects this."
