Profile: THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Jakarta, Nov 18 (ANTARA) - It is no wonder that the United States always plays an important role in all aspects especially the econmic sector among other countries around the globe.
Whatever condition in the superpower frequently influences the international community. The financial crisis in the US for instance has also affected other countries including Indonesia.
However, the US remains considered as an important country as at least 20 nations grouped in G-20 has gatered on November 15, 2008, in Washington DC to discuss global financial crisis.
The United States of America or the US or America for short is located in the western hemisphere with Washington D.C. as the capital city. The total area of this country is 9,826,630 square kilometers and about 6.76 percent is water area.
About 305,674,000 people live in the US, making America the third largest country in population.
The country declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in July 4, 1776 with George Washington served as the first president.
At first there were only 13 colonies of the United States of America which located along the Atlantic seaboard. After Hawaii achieved statehood on August 21, 1959 the US consists of 50 states which do not have the right to secede from the union.
The 13 stripes in the US flag represent the first 13 colonies while the 50 stars represent the present colonies.
The United States is a multicultural nation, home to a wide variety of ethnic groups, traditions, and values. There is no "American" ethnicity; aside from the now small Native American and Native Hawaiian populations, nearly all Americans or their ancestors immigrated within the past five centuries.
The culture held in common by most Americans is referred to as mainstream American culture, a Western Culture largely derived from the traditions of Western European migrants, beginning with the early English and Dutch settlers. German, Irish and Scottish cultures have also been very influential.
The economy of the US is the largest economy in the world. Its gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated about $13.8 trillion and the GDP per capita reached $45,850 in 2007 while the inflation rate from June 2007 to June 2008 is about 5.6 percent.
Main industries in America include petroleum, steel, motor vehicles, aerospace, telecommunications, chemicals, electronics, food processing, consumer goods, lumber, mining and defense.
The export goods of the Uncle Sam country are capital goods (transistors, aircraft, motor vehicle parts, computers, telecommunications equipment), industrial supplies (organic chemicals), consumer goods (automobiles, medicines) and agricultural products (soybeans, fruit, corn), mainly to Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, United Kingdom and Germany.
Meanwhile, the country imports industrial supplies (crude oil), consumer goods (automobiles, clothing, medicines, furniture, toys), capital goods (computers, telecommunications equipment, motor vehicle parts, office machines, electric power machinery) and agricultural product. Main import partner for the US are China, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Germany.
Indonesia has maintained good bilateral relations with the US from a quite a long time ago. Indonesia's non-oil and natural gas exports to that country in January to August 2008 were valued at US$8,514.1 million or about 11.58 % of Indonesia's total non-oil export during the period.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's imports of the US' non-oil and natural gas during January to August 2008 reached US$ 5,197.6 or only about 7.82 percent.
To enhance the Indonesia-America cooperation, on November 12 to 13 2008 a team from the Agency for the Placement and Protection of Overseas Laborers (BNP2TKI) had meetings with Texas Hospital Association (THA), Texas Nurses Association (TNA) and American International Nurses (AIN).
Indonesia's consulate general to Houston Kria Fahmi Pasaribu said some recruitment agencies in Houston has recruited some Indonesia's labors. Meanwhile, President & CEO of Texas Hospital Association (THA), Dan Stulz, said that demand for nurses in Texas was quite big. Every year, hospitals in Texas need about one thousand nurses. Until 2015, the demand for nurses in Texas is projected to reach 45,000 people.
Indonesia's culture is starting to be well known in the American people. This is because Indonesian people in America or Indonesia's embassy and its consulate generals often held cultural events to promote the country's culture.
Indonesia's students in Princeton, for example, held an Indonesian cultural night on November 8 themed Passport to Indonesia in Princeton University. That event showed Indonesia's traditional dances, musics and foods and received many appraisals from the visitors.
With the financial crisis happening in America, many American investors look for another countries considered safer to do investment. The investors consider investment in the Southeast Asian region including Indonesia is safer than investment in the European countries.
