Dalai Lama warns of 'great danger' facing Tibet

DHARAMSALA, India, Nov. 23 Kyodo - The Dalai Lama on Sunday warned Tibetan exiles here that failure of their cause
could lead to serious consequences.

''In the next 20 years we must be careful in our actions and planning.
Otherwise there is great danger to the Tibetan community,'' he said in an
address to Tibetan exile leaders.
The Tibetan spiritual leader did not elaborate, but he appeared to be referring
to relations with China.
The delegates, who gathered from all over the world to discuss the way forward
for over the past week, decided on Saturday against pushing independence for
now and instead stick to the ''Middle Way'' approach to China.
The Dalai Lama called the meeting of over 550 Tibetan exiles to seek a review
of his stand following a lack or progress in autonomy talks with China.
The 73-year-old leader told a later news conference that he would not retire,
ending speculation about his future that arose when he was hospitalized earlier
this year.
''It is my moral responsibility until my death to work for the Tibetan cause,''
he said.
The Dalai Lama said that he is ''satisfied'' with the overall discussions of
the delegates according to reports he received.
''I think it's a very frank discussion. Sometimes heated discussions (were
held) without fear and hesitation,'' he said. ''It seems the majority of the
delegates favored the existing Middle Way approach.''
He said he had not yet made a final decision based on the recommendations of
the delegates, adding that an important meeting of more than 100 international
support groups to be held in New Delhi later this month could provide a better
picture of the way forward.
''End of this month, there will be another meeting where we will see how to
go,'' the Dalai Lama said.
The Dalai Lama fled to India from Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against
Chinese rule, and the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile is located in
Dharamsala, northern India.
