BELGIUM'S PRINCESS MATHILDE VISITS MICRO-FINANCIAL INSTITUTION IN BOGOR
Bogor, Nov 25 (ANTARA) - Princess Mathilde of Belgium visited the Baytul Ikhtiar micro-finance institution in Bogor in West Java on Monday.
The wife of Crown Prince Philippe was here to acommpany her husband who came to Indonesia on Saturday for a visit until Wednesday along with a business delegation to seek possible business cooperation between the two countries.
The princess showed a keen interest in the activity of mothers in the cooperative unit. She paid serious attention to a simulation of loan extension demonstrated at the house of a cooperative member.
Tbe princess who is also a UN envoy for the international year of micro-credit also held a dialogue with a cooperative member and inspected products produced by recipients of credits from the cooperatives such as food and beverages, vegetables and handicrafts.
The program director of the Baytul Ikhtiar cooperative, Mulyadi Hasan, said Baytuk Ikhtiar gave credits to housewives from low-income families. The cooperative adapted the concept of the Grameen Bank in its operation.
Since its establishment in 1993 the cooperative has served more than 6,500 active debtors from the region.
"Right now its total distribution of credits reaches Rp45 billion with a risk ratio of around 0.85 percent. The amount of loan spreads from Rp300,000 to Rp5 million per client," he said.
