HOUSE ASKS GOVT TO ANTICIPATE POSSIBLE INCREASE IN POVERTY RATE

Jakarta, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has called on the government to anticipate the possibility of an increase in the poverty rate in the country as a consequence of the global financial crisis.

The call was voiced by House Speaker Agung Laksono in remarks at the installation of 10 new House members, including Idris Laena of the Golkar Party, in a mid-term member replacement at the legislative building here on Monday.

"The DPR is paying close attention to actual problems directly related to the global financial crisis, especially in developing countries where the poverty rate continues to increase and lay-offs are threatening workers," Laksono said.

He said employers should avoid laying off workers and only consider taking the measure as a last resort.

To avoid lay-offs, the government should take concrete steps to avoid burdening businessmen with unnecessary levies and other obligations that only lead to high costs, and provide them with various stimuli, he said.

Laksono said the global crisis was also having a negative impact on overseas demand for garments and furniture while the property business was also in trouble because of tight banking liquidity.

"The greatest problem is the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar, and it seems that Bank Indonesia finds it difficult to control the rupiah turmoil," he said.

He also said the people were waiting for premium gasoline and diesel oil price cuts while Malaysia had lowered its fuel prices several times following falls in global oil prices.

"The people are still waiting for the government to fulfill its promise to lower the fuel prices in early December 2008. It seems that the calculator used by the government is slower than that used by the DPR or economic observers in their response to the fall in world oil prices," Laksono said.

Meanwhile, Idris Laena, who has just been installed as a new member of the House, said he was ready to do his new job in the DPR and fight for the people's aspirations.

Idris was installed by House Speaker Agung Laksono to replace Saleh Djasit as a member of House Commission VII.
