ASIMO WOWS PATIENTS DURING VISIT TO ADVENTIST HOSPITAL
PENANG (Malaysia), Nov 25 (Bernama) -- Asimo, the world's first advanced humanoid robot, made its first appearance in northern state of Penang at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Penang Adventist Hospital's Heart Patients' Fund here Tuesday.
Atsushi Fujimoto, chief executive officer of its manufacturer, Honda
Malaysia Sdn Bhd, said the presence of Asimo, short Advanced Step in Innovative
Mobility, would bring the message of hope and insipration to encourage
Malaysians to reach for their dreams.
He said that just like the Heart Patients' Fund, which was established to
give hope to the heart patients for a healthy life, "we hope that Asimo will
encourage all of us to hold on to our dream and hope as we rise to the challenge
of turning our dream into reality."
Meanwhile, Penang Adventist Hospital chief executive officerr Teddric Jon
Mohr said he hoped that Honda's dream for Asimo to be a human assistant
would become a reality one day.
He said the hospital had offered 50 free heart surgeries for patients from
government hospitals in conjunction with the fund's 20th anniversary.
Eleven such patients had undergone successful surgery at the hospital over
the last five months, he said, adding that this is the start of a symbiotic
partnership between the government and private healthcare sectors.
Asimo, standing 1.3m tall and weighing 54kg, greeted the 300-strong
audience, mostly children, at the hospital with Malaysian common greeting
phrases "Hello" and "Apa Khabar" (How are You) before introducing
itself.
It sang a birthday song and danced with the children before serving a drink
to the first beneficiary of the fund, Kho Chon Teck.
Kho, 54, a farmer from Tasek Gelugor, had surgery which cost about RM20,000
(US$5,522) after suffering from two defective heart problems.
Besides walking forward, backward and going up and down stairs, Asimo can
run at a maximum speed of 6km/h, manoeuvre smoothly around obstructions, run and
spin on the spot as well as run in a circular pattern.
The robot has been in Malaysia since the end of October and the last
destination of its Malaysian tour is Queensbay Mallon Nov
27-30.
