Abu Dhabi airport registers 32.8% passenger growth

Abu Dhabi, Nov 26, 2008 (WAM) - Despite the global slowdown in the aviation industry, Abu Dhabi International airport said yesterday it has registered an increase of 32.8 per cent in year to date passenger growth for October and the first 10 months of the year, according to the figures released by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) according to a report in “Emirates Business.”

Abu Dhabi International is set to achieve the target of nine million passengers a year, by the end of 2008, with 7.5 million passengers in the first 10 months and over 8.7 million in the trailing 12 months (TTM), representing a 34 per cent increase, Adac said in a statement.

A number of conferences and exhibitions held in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE were partially credited with supporting October's passenger loads. The UK moved into third position (33.1 per cent), with Pakistan becoming the second largest market served from the UAE capital, after India. The ongoing network expansion of Etihad Airways remained a key component in the growth of passenger and cargo figures through Abu Dhabi International.
Strong growth of 34.5 per cent came from India. India's Jet Airways and Pakistan's Air Blue also contributed to the growing capacity to and from the sub-continent.

"While we recognise that such high growth rates are not sustainable indefinitely and if we factor in the considerations surrounding an overall worldwide slowdown in traffic we must be pleased with the sustained growth we are seeing," said Rudy Vercelli, chief executive of Adac.
