Abu Dhabi to feature at Venice Biennale for first time

Abu Dhabi, Nov 27, 2008 (WAM) - The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) yesterday announced that Abu Dhabi will feature for the first time at the Venice Biennale of Visual Art, in 2009. The Biennale, in its 53rd year, is the world's oldest and most prestigious event for the international display of contemporary art.

The ADACH Platform for Venice will be developed under the artistic direction of renowned art historian and curator Catherine David as a highly designed meeting point of artistic productions and encounters, and as a survey of contemporary visual arts and culture from the perspective of Abu Dhabi and beyond.

The exhibition will explore possible scenarios that will define the future of art within Abu Dhabi's strong cultural development. With the rapid growth of its urban developments and multi-ethnic and multinational population, new lifestyle choices are impacting on the region and its economic and geo-political dynamics. As a result, Abu Dhabi's exchanges with the world occur in an accelerated fashion.

This situation will be visually interpreted by photographers, artists and film-makers from the region and abroad, through works specifically commissioned for this project. The results will present analysis of different urban, sociological, and cultural perspectives, integrated within the exhibition structure.

Most of the content will be developed through projects articulated in the ADACH Platform, and may include: - Slide shows, still photography and projected images - Video and film projections including filmed interviews and reflective works - Artists' works in dialogue with the architecture of the exhibition design - Possible interventions by artists from the Arab world at large HE Mohamed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei, Director General of ADACH, said: "We are delighted and extremely proud that Abu Dhabi will have a presence in Venice during the 53rd Venice Art Biennale next year. It is a credit to the skill of our contemporary artists and the quality of their work that they will share a stage with the world's greatest talent".

"Over the past few years Abu Dhabi has developed an ambitious and detailed strategy for promoting and supporting culture and the arts and has made great deal of investment in achieving its initiatives. As a region we are extremely rich in our culture and heritage, both tangible and intangible. We are also totally committed to the cultural education of our children and visitors to the region. Abu Dhabi's presence in Venice during the Biennale is one of the ways in which Abu Dhabi can be really proud of our cultural achievements", he added.

The 2009 Venice Biennale opens on 7th June 2009 and runs through to 22nd November 2009.

In a separate initiative, the United Arab Emirates will establish the UAE Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, making it the first Gulf nation to participate in this pre-eminent cultural event.
