Iran promises Japan more cooperation with IAEA, int'l trust efforts

TOKYO, Nov. 28 Kyodo - Iranian Vice President Esfandiar Rahim Mashai assured Japan on Friday that
Tehran will make more efforts to gain international confidence in its nuclear
program, including cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the
Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
The remarks were made in talks in Tokyo with Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi
Nakasone, during which Nakasone noted the need for Iran to resolve concerns
over its nuclear ambition by responding to international demands and winning
trust, according to the ministry.
On Thursday, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei reiterated the need for
''maximum transparency'' in Iran's disclosure of information and called on
Tehran to ''implement all measures required to build confidence.''
The United States, Britain and other Western powers accuse Iran of defying
international demands and continuing uranium enrichment activities. Iran
maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful use.
Mashai, who serves concurrently as head of the Iranian Cultural Heritage,
Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, also extended an invitation from himself
and Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to Nakasone to visit Iran.
The Iranian vice president arrived in Japan on Thursday for a six-day visit.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Iran.
