UAE, ROPME discuss ways to arrest red tide
Dubai, Dec 1, 2008 (WAM) - Minister of Environment and Water Dr. Rashid bin Fahad received yesterday Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Awadi, Executive Secretary of Kuwait-based Regional Organization for the Protection of Marine Environment (ROPME).
The meeting discussed the best ways of containing the red tide phenomenon which hit coasts in the eastern parts of the UAE and those of neighbouring countries. ''Red tide" is a common name for a phenomenon known as an algal bloom, an event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column, or "bloom".
The meeting proposed convening of a workshop for ROMPE member state to discuss the issue in detail and recommend solutions. The minister said his ministry had made substantial efforts to control the red tide effects.
