MALAYSIAN DURIAN PULPS TO CHINA NEXT YEAR

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The Federal Agriculture Marketing
Authority (Fama) is marketing durian pulps to Shanghai, China, next year
following high demand for the fruit in the country.

FAMA Regional Senior Director (Operations) Ahmad Ishak said the pulps of
Malaysian durians, which were more aromatic than durians produced by other
countries and suitable for use as a flavouring item in various food products,
would be well-received in China.

He said FAMA was encouraged to find markets for Malaysian durians in China
following its success in Singapore where the pulps were used in the making of
various food products, like moon and layered cakes and dumplings.

Shanghai would be our second destination due to the high demand for durians
there, he told Bernama here recently.

He said Fama used the 'cryogenic' technique, first introduced in 2006 to
freeze durian fruits for export to Australia, to preserve and ensure quality of
the durian pulps.

FAMA, he said, had also developed a machine to remove the durian pulps from
its fruit, which was previously done manually.

"In 2006, we sent a container with 15 metric tonnes of durians to Australia
to test the markets there and another container the following year.

"This year we sent three containers of durians because of an increase in
demand for the fruits there," he added.

Ahmad said Malaysian durians were also sold in Hong Kong, made possible
with the cooperation of the Giant supermarket chain.

On this year's production of durian products, he said a 107 per cent
increase was expected between June and December, from 35,148 metric tonnes last
year to 74,761 metric tonnes.

"Based on statistics from June to October this year, Perak, which produces
30,478 metric tonnes of durians, is the largest contributor, followed by
Kelantan with 17,750 metric tonnes," he added.

He said in view of the increase in durian production, FAMA would expand its
cold room complex operation to Machang in Kelantan next year.

Currently, the facility is available in Jerantut in east coast state of
Pahang; Taiping in northern state of Perak; Tangkak in southern state of Johor
and Sungai Petani in northern state of Kedah, while the durian marketing centre
is in Berseri in northern state of Perlis.

Ahmad said the cold room facility was built to make it easier for farmers
to sent the durians to the FAMA purchasing centre on time.

"Time factor is important to ensure quality of the durians and the pulps,"
he said, adding that programmes would be conducted to brief farmers on ways to
maintain the quality of fruits after they were harvested.
