Miladinov: United Nations stands ready to respond to the vast displaced

BAGHDAD / NINA / The representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Nikolai Miladinov confirmed, "The United Nations stands ready to respond to the vast displaced and the humanitarian emergencies in Sinjar." He said in a statement for UNAMI, "displaced families are living in Sinjar in extremely harsh conditions and have enormous and urgent humanitarian needs." Miladinov added "in order to provide immediate protection to save lives and to provide humanitarian assistance to the displaced, the United Nations is ready to respond to the vast emergency that will ensure the provision of services and adequate support, including the provision of drinking water and distribution of goods, and rehabilitation of wells and storage." For his part, the representative of UNICEF in Iraq, Marzio Babille said that "a team from United Nations consists of specialists visited Sinjar in west of Nineveh in a second humanitarian mission after the first in 28th of last month, where about 8,000 families had fled from neighboring Tal Afar district, 35,000 of them are children ". He added that "children under the age of 5 are most susceptible to diarrheal diseases as a result of poor hygienic conditions and unsafe use of water, with limited availability of safe drinking water," noting that they "need most urgent humanitarian needs in order to prevent the spread and increased incidence of diarrheal diseases due to overcrowding." The statement said that "UNICEF and the World Health Organization have provided emergency medical kits, but the region is suffering from an acute shortage of medical personnel and capabilities".. / End
