Gist of statements issued at summit of Japan, China, S. Korea

FUKUOKA, Dec. 13 Kyodo - The following is a gist of statements issued at the meeting of Japanese,
Chinese and South Korean leaders held Saturday in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture.
(Tripartite Partnership)
The heads of the government of Japan, China and South Korea:
-- uphold visions and responsibilities for creating a peaceful, prosperous and
sustainable future for the region and international community.
-- have reached a common recognition that the tripartite cooperation will be
guided under the principle of openness, transparency, mutual trust, common
interest and respect for our diverse cultures.
-- are determined to pursue comprehensive cooperation, including political,
economic, social and cultural fields, within both governmental and
non-governmental frameworks in a future-oriented manner.
-- look forward to meeting again in China next year.
(Financial, economic issues)
-- shared the view that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation to cope with
the challenges faced by the world and the financial markets.
-- welcomed the recent decisions to increase the bilateral currency swap
arrangements among the three countries.
-- reiterated their commitment to expedite the process of the Chiang Mai
Initiative on currency swap arrangements.
-- declared they would continue to make efforts to reach a conclusion of the
Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organization as early as possible to
counter protectionism.
(Disaster management)
-- shared the view that it is crucial for the three countries to share
information on projects, lessons learned and science and technologies to
strengthen disaster management capability.
-- will enhance cooperation in strengthening effective disaster management at
the national, local and community levels.
-- shared the view to hold trilateral heads of government agency and
expert-level meetings on disaster management and to consider the first meeting
to be hosted by Japan next year.
