OMBUDSPERSON`S OFFICE HOLDS “ROUND TABLE” MEETING ON MIGRANTS` RIGHTS
Baku, 19 December,(AzerTAj)A “round-table” meeting entitled “Protection of migrants in Azerbaijan: problems and perspectives” took place at the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan (Ombudsperson), Friday, to mark the
International Migrants Day (18 December) and the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan`s joining the Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
The event brought together representatives of governmental, non-governmental and
non-profit organizations.
Speaking of migration problems in general, Ombudsperson Elmira Suleymanova noted,
however, that intensive social and economic development in Azerbaijan made the
country very attractive for migrant workers.
She also addressed the problems of domestic migration caused by the fact that
thousands of Azerbaijani citizens were forced to leave their homes as a result of
the Armenian military aggression against Azerbaijan.
Other speakers pointed out the role of the Azerbaijan government in protection of
the rights of migrant workers and the importance of relevant of legislative acts
adopted, including the laws On Immigration and On Labor Migration.
