MALAYSIAN COMPANY WINS US$1.5 BIL POWER PLANT PROJECT IN VIETNAM

From Adnan Jahaya
HANOI, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysian company Janakuasa Sdn Bhd (Janakuasa) is to
build a coal-powered US$1.5 billion power plant in Tra Vinh province in south
Vietnam to meet the energy needs of the rapidly-developing former communist
nation.

Known as "Duyen Hai 2", the 500KV plant will start construction in 2011 and
slated for completion in 2015, says Janakuasa president and chief executive
officer Ti Chee Liang.

Vietnam awarded the massive project to Janakuasa recently, the sole
Malaysian company to undertake a power plant project in the Indo-Chinese
country, he told reporters here Monday night.

Chee Liang said Duyen Hai 2 is among the projects listed in the Sixth Power
Facility Development Master Plan drawn up by the Vietnamese government to cope
with the sudden surge in power demand.

Power demand is expected to grow between 17 and 22 percent between 2006 and
2015, among the fastest in Asian nations after China.

Chee Liang said Janakuasa will sign a 30-year concession agreement with the
Vietnam Electricity Authority soon.

"In thanking the Vietnamese government for awarding the project, Janakuasa
will contribute funds to the proposed education fund," he said.

He said Janakuasa is prepared to donate US$1 million a year for the fund to
build scholls in rural areas.

"We're proud of Vietnam's confidence in Janakuasa to operate the power plant
without the assistance of a local partner.

"Janakuasa believes it can do the job based on its experience managing
Teknologi Tenaga Perlis Consortium Sdn Bhd in Perlis since 2003," he said.

Janakuasa is the majority stakeholder in the consortium whose main
task is to supply electricity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's power giant.

Chee Liang said Janakuasa has appointed ALSTOM Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd as the
contractor for the power plant.

Earlier, Chee Liang accompanied Senate Speaker Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh, who
called on Vietnamese Trade and Industry Minister Vu Huy Hoang.

The former Perlis Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) thanked the Vietnamese
government for having confidence in Janakuasa to implement the project.

"I was the consortium chairman when it started scouting around for
investment prospects in Vietnam more than two years ago. I've since relinquish
the post after being appointed Dewan Negara (Senate) speaker," he added.
