ISRAELI ATTACKS VIOLATE UN CHARTER, INT`L LAW EXPERTS SAY

Jakarta, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - International law expert Hikmahanto Juwana said the Israeli attacks to the Gaza Strip had violated the United Nations Charter, although Israel claimed their attacks were launched in self-defense.

According to Juwana in a discussion on Legal and Political Perspectives on Israeli-Palestine War here Wednesday, Israel could refer to the UN Charter bases for its attacks.

He said that based on Article 51 of the UN Charter, Israel was supposed to notify the UN on its planned aggression, and let the UN Security Council to take action.

"If Israel admitted that it was attacked by Hamas, it should have reported it to the UNSC which would then take over the situation," he said.

Therefore, he added, the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip in Palestine were illegal and called an "unjust war".

"Israeli attacks were excessive and indiscriminate. They did not differentiate the civilians from fighters, people's shelters from military installations," he said.

Todung Mulya Lubis, a senior lawyer, also said the same thing saying that the aggression was illegal and a war crime if the UN had the courage say so.
