INDONESIA CONDEMNS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY ISRAEL IN GAZA

Jakarta, Jan 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesia condemns the violation of human rights by Israel in the Gaza Strip and asks the international community to urge Israel to respect international and human rights laws.

The statement was submitted by the Indonesian delegation to the 9th special session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, according to an official statement of the delegation received by ANTARA here on Friday.
It said the Indonesian delegation stated that the international community could not remain idle and waiting for escalation of the human rights violations and humanitarian crisis suffered by the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip that had so far claimed more than 700 lives and injuries on 2.500 others including women and children.
In view of that, it urged the Human Rights Commission as a competent UN body to deal with the issue and to immediately endorse a strong resolution on Israel.
Earlier, Indonesia welcomed the resolution of the UN Security Council for an immediate and enduring cease-fire in the Gaza Strip followed by the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.
The Indonesian delegation said it could not accept if the Human Rights Commission did not take a concret action to prevent further fall of innocent victims from the Israeli collective punishment since December 27, 2008.
It supported the proposal that the Human Rights Commission set up a "rapid response team" to monitor human rights violations in Palestine by Israel as an occupying force and for an immediate opening of economic blockade and access for humanitarian aid needed by civilians and had called on the High Commissioner and Special Rapporteur to immediately visit the Gaza Strip to assess the situation and immediately report to the Human Rights Commission.
To overcome the humanitarian crisis in Gaza the Indonesian government has extended US$1 million in cash as well as other aid supplies to enlighten the burden of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The worsening situation in the Gaza Strip required special attention from the Human Rights Commission and in view of that the Indonesian delegation emphasized that force was not a solution for settling conflicts in the region.
Indonesia has urged members of the Human Rights Commission to support the resolution that carries a strong message for the international community regarding human rights violations by Israel in Gaza.
The special meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission was the initiative of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Conference, the Arab League and the African Group that had built a strong coalition to raise the issue.
Until Friday morning ( Geneva time) discussions on the draft resolution remained tough so that a concensus might not be reached so that voting would likely be held on Friday afternoon or Monday.
