CHIEF MINISTER WANTS HERITAGE OF SUFFOLK HOUSE PRESERVED

PENANG (Malaysia), Jan 10 (Bernama) -- The Anglo-Indian architecture of the Suffolk House should be preserved in line with the building recognised as a heritage by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Chief Minister of northern state of Penang, Lim Guan Eng, said Saturday.

As such, he advised the company which would be awarded tender to manage the
house to preserve the building's heritage.

Lim, who visited Suffolk House Saturday said the building was built by
Francis Light in the early 19th century.

He said application for the tender to manage Suffolk House would close on
Jan 16 and urged those with experience in managing heritage buildings to apply.

Suffolk House is one of the tourist attractions in Penang. Restoration work
on the building was completed early last year.

Meanwhile, in another matter, Lim said the state government had instructed
the Penang Municipal Council to launch a Central Area Transport (CAT) bus
service to enhance efficiency of public transportation in the city.

"The bus service is free for trips from Komtar to the heritage area," he
added.

Lim will launch the service, carried with the cooperation of bus company
RapidPenang, on Jan 23.
