ALI ALATAS REMEMBERED FOR ENHANCING TIES

JAKARTA, Jan 13 (Bernama) - Former Indonesian foreign minister Ali Alatas
will be best remembered for his contribution in enhancing the diplomatic ties
between Malaysia and Indonesia, said Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi.
"To Malaysians, he was a dear friend. During his tenure as Indonesian
foreign minister, he dedicated his efforts in fostering closer relations between
Malaysia and Indonesia," he said at dinner to celebrate the life and service of
Ali Alatas here Monday night.
His speech was read by the Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia Zainal Abidin
Mohamed Zain.
Describing Ali as a statesman and a fine diplomat, Abdullah said as a member
of the Asean imminent person's group, Ali was instrumental in promulgating the
Asean Charter.
"He leaves a legacy behind. He had made invaluable contribution in the human
rights issue and it was a masterpiece. He was committed to the Asean endeavour
until he breath his last on Dec 11 last year," he said.
