AZERBAIJAN NATIONAL FLAG INSTALLED ON ANTARCTICA’S HIGHEST PEAK, MT. WINSON
Baku, January 14 (AzerTAc)- The first Azerbaijani expedition to Antarctica has conquered the highest peak of Antarctica, Mt. WInson (5140 m).
On January 12 at 19:00 (Chile time; 11:00 Baku time), members of the expedition installed Azerbaijan`s national flag and a bronze plaque with the portrait of nationwide
leader Heydar Aliyev reading “I am proud of being Azerbaijani” on the front side and
a portrait of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the reverse side reading
“Azerbaijan, go ahead with Ilham”.
Members of the expedition informed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about the
occasion via satellite communication system. The President congratulated them on
this historic event, and wished them every success in their further research work.
Headed by President of the Air and Extreme Sports Federation of Azerbaijan
Huseyngulu Bagirov, the
expedition left Baku on December 24, 2008 and started for the Antarctica from the
Chilean base of Patriot Hills on December 30. On their way, they carried out over
300 meteorological surveys and selected up to 2 kilograms of precious geological
samples.
At the moment, the expedition is moving towards the South Pole to continue research
activities.
