DIRECT GOVERNMENT AID FOR NATIONAL-TYPE SCHOOLS: DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- The government pays great attention to the
national education system by directly giving financial aid of RM200 million
(about US$55.6 million) to four categories of government-aided schools through
the economic stimulus package announced in Parliament last year.

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said through this new approach the
financial aid is given equally to all boards of governors of government-aided
Chinese, Tamil, missionary and religious schools.

"The government is confident that the change in the giving of aid will lead
to greater satisfaction in the national education system and enhance the quality
of education to an international level," he said.

Najib said this in his speech at the cheque presentation ceremony for
financial aid for national Chinese-type schools (SRJK (C)) under the 2009
national economic stimulus package at SJK (C) Chee Yen in Subang Jaya near here
Thursday.

Financial aid amounting to RM27 million (US$7.6 milliom) will be given to
237 SJK (C) schools throughout the country.
