UAE urges UN to bring pressure on Israel to end aggression on Gaza
New York – Jan 18, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE has urged the international community to intensify efforts to bring pressure to bear on Israel to respect UN Security Council Resolution 1860, which calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces and unimpeded provision of humanitarian assistance.
UAE Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al-Jarman, made the statement last night in his address to the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly to discuss Israel's unlawful acts in East Jerusalem and other occupied Palestinian territories, particularly, in Gaza.
Al-Jarman expressed his country's hope that the ongoing diplomatic moves would succeed in ending the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and bring all concerned parties to the negotiation table to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
He also expressed the UAE's condemnation of the Israeli army's barbaric attacks on civilians in the Gaza Strip since December 27, 2008, using excessive military force and internationally banned weapons to bombard civilian targets and destroy infrastructure, the besieging of innocent civilians, killing more than thousand so far, 40% of whom are children and women, maiming about five thousand and displacing tens of thousands more.
He said Israel also continues to block humanitarian assistance, including food and medicines, from reaching the wounded and the displaced persons only to compound the sufferings of its victims physically and mentally, pushing the region to the brink of intolerable humanitarian catastrophe, which poses a threat to global peace and security.
He stated that the UAE, while expressing deep concern about the continuation of violence and the escalation of humanitarian sufferings of the Palestinian people in Gaza, reiterates its support for and solidarity with the Palestinians in their present predicament, adding that his country wants to assure the Palestinian people that it will do all it can to alleviate their sufferings and end the tragic situation they currently live in.
He urged the Security Council to live up to its responsibilities of protecting global peace and security as well as protecting Palestinian civilians.
