THAILAND'S AVIAN FLU MEASURES FOR MALAYSIA
BANGKOK, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Successful ways of preventing avian and human
influenza in Thailand will be extended to Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam,
the International Labour Organisation (ILO) said Monday.
The ILO said the techniques used by Thailand's poultry workers, farmers and
small- and medium-size enterprises would be discussed at a workshop here
Tuesday where representatives from the four countries would also be present.
The ILO's "Avian and Human Influenza in the Workplace (Thailand) Project"
would discuss how the experience gained in Thailand could be applied in other
countries in the region.
It said in a statement here that Thailand's strategic plans for Avian
Influenza and Pandemic Human Influe nza and the workplace, and other national
action plans would be discussed.
"This project has alerted businesses and workers to the importance of
preparing for avian and pandemic human influenza and has given them easy-to-use
practical, cost-effective tools and techniques for protecting themselves," said
Bill Salter, Director, ILO Subregional Office for East Asia.
Phase one of the project trained 1,400 people in practical prevention and
preparedness techniques while phase two, due to commence in February and to last
one year, would expand the work to cover other areas of Thailand and introduce
it in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam.
