Abu Dhabi commits to 7 per cent renewable energy target by 2020

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Government of Abu Dhabi has announced a commitment that by 2020, renewable energy sources will account for at least seven percent of the Emirate's total power generation capacity.
The Emirate's renewable energy target is a key element of the Government's comprehensive energy policy which is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2009. The release of the Government's 7 percent renewable energy target has been brought forward to coincide with the opening of the World Future Energy Summit taking place in Abu Dhabi this week.
H.E. Mohamed Al Bowardi, Secretary General of the Executive Council said: "The establishment of a long-term renewable energy target for Abu Dhabi builds on the Emirate's leadership in energy and sustainability. It is a further reflection of the environmental legacy established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan." A seven percent renewable energy target for Abu Dhabi is large by global standards, given the relative size of the Emirate and its population. The decision will contribute to the ongoing diversification of the Emirate's economy by stimulating the local renewable energy sector.
The World Future Energy Summit is being held in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Running from 19-21 January 2009, it will bring together high-level government and business representatives, and other leaders in the field of renewable energy, to facilitate the development of new solutions to the world's future energy challenges.
