Emiratisation up by 30% in 2008
Dubai, Jan 20, 2009 (WAM) - The number of UAE nationals employed by the National Human Resource Development and Employment Authority (Tanmia) increased by 30 per cent last year as the authority explored new sectors for Emiratisation according to a report in “Gulf News.”
More than 2,400 UAE nationals were employed in the public and private sector by Tanmia in 2008 and about 2,290 received different forms of training including on-the-job training, according to the authority's statistics.
There are about 14,000 UAE national jobseekers registered at Tanmia out of which more than 67 per cent are women.
Ahmad Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of Tanmia's Board of Trustees said that the authority has adopted a new approach for providing jobs for Emiratis and new sectors are being explored.
"We are exploring new sectors which are quickly growing and can provide job opportunities that are suitable for Emiratis such as the tourism and hospitality and aviation sectors," said Al Tayer. "We are facing a greater challenge this year to expand our recruitment operation in the private sector as many companies are being restructured due to the global financial crisis. However, in my opinion there will be no decrease in the number of Emiratis employed," he added.
The authority aims to employ around 2,400 UAE nationals in 2009, according to Feddah Lootah, Acting Director-General at Tanmia.
The authority has also launched a new programme called Tahfeez, the Arabic word for 'to motivate', aimed at giving incentives for companies in the private sector who employ Emiratis as part of Tanmia's plan for 2009.
The programme is based on a labour market study currently being conducted by the Ministry of Labour to specify sectors in the national economy which could absorb Emiratis as part of the government's efforts to address the demographic imbalance. The ministry will submit its recommendations to the Cabinet after which the Cabinet will decide what kind of incentives will be included in the Tahfeez programme, according to Al Tayer No time-frame has been given.
