POLICE MAY REVIEW RULE ON MOTORCYCLISTS WEARING TURBAN, "SERBAN"

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Police are expected to discuss and review
the rule on motorcyclists wearing the turban and "serban" (cloth headgear), with
the Attorney-General's Office soon.

Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan said currently Sikhs (turban) and
Muslim Scholars (Ulama) who wear a "serban (Muslim headgear) are exempted from
wearing crash helmets while riding a motorcycle.

"The issue now is that we do not know whether the individual is an Ulama or
a trend among students to wear the serban instead of helmets," he told reporters
here after attending a ceremony held by the Foundation for Crime Prevention here
Tuesday.

Musa was commenting on a case in northeastern city of Kota Baru when a
religious school student, Ahmad Nasir Darus, 27, who refused pay the fine was
Monday sentenced to two days jail by a Magistrate's court for riding a
motorcycle wearing a "serban" instead of a crash helmet.

Musa said he had also proposed to the Minister of Transport Ong Tee Keat to
bar motorcyclists from wearing crash helmets at tourist destinations and
shopping centres identified as high risk areas for snatch theft cases.

"Among areas identified is Bukit Bintang where snatch theft is common," he
said.
