M'SIA-CHINA TRADE TO SURPASS US$50 BLN IN 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Bilateral trade between Malaysia and China is
expected to easily exceed US$50 billion in 2008 from US$46.4 billion a year
earlier, Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat said Tuesday.

He said Malaysia would continue to engage China to boost political, economic
and trade ties, particularly in efforts to create business opportunities in view
of the looming global economic slowdown.

"We will be working on various fronts in trying to create more business and
trade opportunities in our engagements with China's Ministries of Commerce,
Health, Transport and Railway," he said in his latest blog posting from Beijing.

Ong, who is also Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) President, is currently
leading the MCA political and trade delegation to Beijing. MCA is a component
party of the ruling Barisan National (BN) coalition.

"Our 70-odd strong delegation, comprising top leaders from the party and
prominent businessmen, arrived in the capital city of China Sunday evening and
for many of us, work had already begun," he said.

He said the choice of being in China was significant as both MCA and China
celebrate their 60th anniversary this year.

The year also marks 35 years of the establishment of Malaysia-China
diplomatic ties.

"It is therefore opportune for us to respond to the invitation by the leader
of Communist Party of China President Hu Jintao to visit this rising political
and economic powerhouse," said Ong.

"Both Malaysia and China are again expected to draw on each of our strengths
and close cooperation to bring about continued benefits for both countries,
even more so, as we are facing the looming global economic downturn," he said.

"We are reminded that trade with China itself was US$46.4 billion in 2007 as
compared to US$30.7 billion two years earlier, and we expect the official
figures to easily surpass US$50 billion for 2008," he said.

He said the delegation would also look for ways to cooperate with the
National Tourism Administration and even COFCO Limited, China's largest
diversified products and services supplier in agri-business and food industry.

"We will also cover areas such as education and training," he said.

"We hope further warming of political friendship, coupled with strong
economic and trade cooperation with China will be able to create more jobs and
opportunities for Malaysians at home.

"Let us be reminded the struggles of both MCA and PRC throughout our 60-year
history demonstrate our natural instinct, resilience and spirit to rise to
the occasion in facing challenges and obstacles. I am confident we will
prevail," he added. (US$1=RM3.62)
