RI MINISTER CALLS ON WHO TO IMPROVE HEALTH CONDITION IN GAZA

London, Jan 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari has urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to give its serious attention to the improvement of health condition in the Gaza Strip and an immediate extension of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

The Indonesian minister made the call at the 124th World Health Executive Board Assembly in Geneva on Tuesday, Acep Somantri, a spokesman of the Indonesian permanent representative in Geneva, told ANTARA here on Wednesday.
Acep Somantri said the assembly, attended by 34 WHO Executive Board members to discuss global health issues, would last until January 27.
As a member of the WHO Executive Board for 2007-2010 period, the Indonesian health minister on the occasion asked WHO to send health care team to the Gaza Strip and extend humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people as soon as possible.
In addition, Siti Fadilah Supari also asked the World Health Organization to establish a "Rapid Humanitarian Unit" to improve the organization's capability in responding to humanitarian disaster in conflict areas.
She said Israeli military air strike on the Gaza Strip in Palestinian border had worsened the health condition there because thousands of Palestinian people, especially children and women, fell victims in the attack.
The Indonesian health minister explained that her country had sent its medical team to the Gaza Strip.
In cooperation with Mercy Corps and Red Crescent, the Indonesian medical team had sent more than two tons of food and medicine to the Palestinian people.
