ACTION TO BE TAKEN AGAINST SUGAR HOARDING - MINISTER
PUTRAJAYA, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry would take action against those hoarding sugar deliberately.
Its Minister Shahrir Abdul Samad said the enforcement unit of his
ministry was monitoring the sugar supply from the manufacturers, wholesale
suppliers and traders to ensure that there will be no shortage in production or
supply.
"There is enough production and supply, as such action will be taken against
anybody trying to hoard sugar as a means to make some profit by increasing the
price later.
"Deliberate hoarding may create a temporary shortage in supply and we will
make sure there will be no attempt to stop supply," he told reporters here
Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Shahrir hinted that the price of sugar may go up after the
Chinese New Year following an increase in the price of sugar in the global
market.
Malaysia import about 80 percent of sugar for domestic use from Fiji and
Thailand.
