MALAYSIAN AND QATARI FIRMS SIGN DEALS

DOHA, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Two Malaysian firms signed deals with their Qatari counterparts during the Malaysia-Qatar Business forum held here Wednesday in conjunction with the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to the gulf state.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged between Zecon Bhd and
Diar Real Estate Investment Company while a joint venture agreement was swapped
between Sime Darby Engineering Sdn Bhd and Al Mana Trading Company.

Zecon's Chief Executive Officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad signed on
behalf of his company while Diar's CEO signed on behalf of his company.

Under the MoU Zecon would provide services related to Diar's construction
projects.

Under the business arrangement, Qatar is expected to benefit from
the know how of the Malaysian expertise in civil engineering, building,
infrastructure and property developments, while Malaysia will have the
opportunity to tap into the Qatari real estate market.

Meanwhile, Sime Darby's managing director Datuk Mohamed Shukri Baharom
signed on behalf of his company while Al Mana was represented by its chairman
Omar Al Mana.

Their agreement will provide for the tapping of business opportunities in
the property, health care, construction and oil and gas sectors.

Earlier, Abdullah in his sppeech said trade between Malaysia and Qatar has
grown progressively over the past decade rising from US$45 million in 1998 to
US$319.68 million in 2007.

During that period Malaysia's export to Qatar increased from US$36.5 million
to US$295.8 million, and imports increased from US$8.5 million to US$23.7
million.

As at November 2008, the trade volume reached US$503.8 million, an
impressive increase of 59 per cent from US$316 million over the same period of
2007, Abdullah said.

Abdullah also highlighted Islamic banking and finance and halal products and
services as two new sectors in which Malaysia and Qatar business communities
companies could further collaborate.

He said the Malaysian government has introduced various measures and tax
incentives to create a modern and efficient international Islamic financial
centre and as a result of these measures, Malaysia today is a premier
international Islamic financial centre.

Abdullah also invited Qatari businesses to take part or visit the Malaysian
International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) in May saying that it was a special effort
by Malaysia to enhance international business and trade in halal products and
services.
