KEEP UP M'SIA'S GOOD NAME IN UAE, SAYS PM By Muin Abdul Majid

ABU DHABI, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he is proud that Malaysian construction firms are keeping the Malaysian flag flying high in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), having clinched contracts in the competitive construction sector in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, among others.

He said they should maintain the good name of Malaysia by striving to
deliver what was expected of them.

On the second and final day of his official visit to the UAE Friday,
Abdullah toured the multi-billion dirham Al Reem Island development -- a
residential, commercial and business project being built off the north-eastern
coast of Abu Dhabi City.

Four Malaysian contracting companies, namely IJM Construction Sdn Bhd,
Sunway Builders Sdn Bhd, Zelan Holdings Sdn Bhd and LFE Engineering Sdn Bhd,
have joined hands to form the ISZL Consortium which is currently building five
residential towers comprising 2,000 units on Al Reem Island.

"The feedback that we've received is that Malaysians are a very reliable
and capable lot," Abdullah told a gathering attended by some 200 Malaysians
residing in Abu Dhabi after visiting the project.

According to ISZL Consortium project director Wan Chee Leong, the initial
cost of the residential towers project was 1.3 billion dirhams (US$0.35
billion)but additional work requested by their client could push the amount to
two billion dirhams.

"At the moment, our package is about 55 per cent completed," he told
reporters, adding that it was scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

According to Wan, it was the first time that major Malaysian contracting
companies had formed a joint venture to carry out a mega project in Abu Dhabi.

ISZL has 300 management staff, of which over 100 are Malaysians. It deploys
4,000 workers for the five-tower project.

Abdullah also performed Friday prayers at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, named
after the first president and founder of the UAE, who was buried at a mausoleum
within the mosque's compound after his death in November 2004.

Also called the Grand Mosque, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is said to be the
third largest in the world and can accommodate about 40,000 worshippers.

A 5,000 sq metres Iranian carpet placed in the main prayer hall, woven by
about 1,200 Iranian women, is the largest hand-woven carpet in the world.

The UAE is the final stop of Abdullah's three-nation tour of Gulf Arab
states that had also took him to Bahrain and Qatar.

The Malaysian leader and his wife Jeanne Abdullah are scheduled to fly home
Saturday morning from Dubai.
