MALAYSIA NEEDS SECOND STIMULUS PACKAGE
PEKAN (Pahang, Malaysia), Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said that Malaysia's progressive step in introducing the second economic stimulus package was necessary in the midst of the current global economic turmoil.
"It is better for us to do it progressively because we do not know the
size of the global problem but our assessment is that the second package is
necessary.
"Once we meet the assessment, then the process of formulating the
second package will begin," he told reporters after handing out school uniforms
and bags sponsored by Amanah Raya Berhad to 2,000 students in the Pekan
parliamentary constituency here Saturday.
He said this when asked to comment on the steps being taken by the goverment
to face the increasingly critical global economic crisis.
Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, said that stimulus package was
important in creating more economic activities apart from overcoming the problem
of a mass retrenchment of workers.
Najib expressed the hope that the public would give their views and feedback
on what steps could be taken by the government to overcome the economic crisis.
"Having launched my website, www.1malaysia.com.my, I am seeking the opinion
of the general public in trying to get as much feedback on all sectors of the
economy," he said.
At present, Najib said several fiscal and monetary measures had been
initiated, to face the global economic crisis.
"On Friday, the Central Bank of Malaysia made an announcement on a RM2
billion fund for Small Medium Enteprises and also the credit guarantee scheme,
which means that they can get loans from merchant banks.
"This is is very significant development because if banks continue to lend,
there will be more economic activities and no massive reduction in employment,"
he said.
Najib also extended his Chinese New Year greetings to the Chinese community,
with the hope that all Malaysians will work harder in the year of the bull, to
overcome the global economic crisis which is also being felt in the country.
"This year, our economic growth is expected to be slower than previously. As
such we need to redouble our efforts to work harder. With the correct government
policies, we will overcome the pressure of the global economic crisis and
recover the country's good growth," he said.
