AZERBAIJANI EXPEDITION 34kms AWAY FROM SOUTH POLE

Baku, January 24 (AzerTAc). The first expedition Azerbaijan-Antarctica headed by President of the Azerbaijan Air and Extreme Sports Federation Huseyngulu Bagirov is now 34 kilometers away from South Pole.

In a message sent through the Iridium satellite network, members of the expedition
said they are moving ahead despite difficult weather conditions, and have so far
taken 459 meteorological measurements.
The speed of the expedition`s movement depends on weather conditions. At 42-44
degrees below zero the athletes make 10-11 kilometers in 8-9 hours, while at higher
temperatures (28-29 degrees below zero) they make 15 kilometers.
On January 12, the expedition conquered the highest peak of Antarctica, Mt. WInson
(5140 m) to install Azerbaijan`s national flag and a bronze plaque with the portrait
of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev reading “I am proud to be Azerbaijani” on the
front side and portrait of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the reverse side
reading “Azerbaijan, go ahead with Ilham”.
