Malaysia Men's Single Shuttler Upsets Prannoy At Hong Kong Open
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's professional men's singles shuttler Chong Wei Feng made a great comeback to upset India's HS Prannoy in the second round of the Hong Kong Open Super Series.
The world number 53, who lost 15-21 in the first set, outclassed the world number 25, 21-11, 21-15 in the next two sets, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) official website bwfsuperseries.com.
With the win, Wei Feng managed to level the head-to-head record with the Indian to 1-1 after losing in the Denmark Open last month.
In the quarterfinals tomorrow, the 2015 Singapore SEA Games gold medalist will face another Indian player, Sameer Verma, who defeated Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 19-21, 21-15, 21-11, Thursday.
However, lady luck ran out on the National women's doubles pair, Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei who went down to third seeded Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christina Pedersen of Denmark 10-21, 21-11, 21-9.
In a late fixture, Rio Olympics silver medalist, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong had to work hard before securing their berth in the quarterfinals after staging a dramatic comeback against China's Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan.
It took the world number one pair more than an hour to overcome the Chinese pair 19-21, 21-17, 21-16 and set up a date with Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan/Rian Agung Saputro who smashed their way to the quarterfinals by beating eight seeds Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi 21-18, 21-16.
Following them into the last eight were the country's number two men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi, who secured another comeback win against South Korea's Jae Hwan Kim/Yoo Yeon Seong 11-21, 21-10, 21-18.
However, they will face an uphill task after drawing fourth seeded Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen who defeated Indonesian pair Markis Kido/Hendra Aprida Gunawan.
