Malaysians Should Stop Investing In Myanmar - NGO
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- To put pressure on Myanmar for allegedly committing atrocities against the Rohingya, the Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN) has urged Malaysian investors to cease investing in that country.
BHRN executive director, Kyaw Win said the international community, especially ASEAN countries should also reconsider their investments in Myanmar, as well.
"Malaysia has many investors in Burma (Myanmar), as investors you have more power. You (Malaysian investors) are a strong partner, use this as strength to help your brothers and sisters in Burma.
"When you stop investing or take back your investment, that means you are taking away part of their (Myanmar's) strength.
"This will give a message to those people that what they are doing is not right and must be stopped," he said after an interview with the 'Bernama Today' television programme here Wednesday.
He said the only way to stop the violence against the Rohingya was by bringing back the sanction.
Kyaw Win said it was also alarming that thousands of children in Myanmar were showing signs of impairment growth caused by chronic malnutrition, adding that food aid was crucially needed at the moment.
The Rohingyas were reported to have been oppressed, leading to thousands fleeing Myanmar from the atrocities against them.
