TRIBUTE PAID TO “BLACK JANUARY” VICTIMS IN WASHINGTON



Washington, 26 January (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan Trade and Culture Center in Washington
jointly with the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the United States held a memorial evening
to pay tribute to the victims of 20 January, 1990, the Baku bloody tragedy. The
event brought together senior representatives of Azerbaijani Diaspora, friends to
Azerbaijan, top officials of the Azerbaijan Embassy and Azerbaijan Trade and Culture
Center. Azerbaijani Ambassador to US Yashar Aliyev said 1990 January events have
disclosed true “face” of the Soviet empire. Head of the US Azerbaijan Trade Chamber
Mahir Iskander said though ex-president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev was
the initiator of the 1990 Baku massacre, he has won the recognition of hero, who has
put an end to the “cold war”. According to Felix Sertsvadze, Azerbaijani writer
currently living in USA, author of the book “Unforgotten genocide” and a number of
other investigative materials dedicated to January 1990 events, Gorbachev must
respond for Baku slaughter.
The event also featured the documentary “The Way Led to Bloody January”.
