SOME 30 RIVERS IN BANJARMASIN NO LONGER EXIST

Banjarmasin, Indonesia, Jan 27 (ANTARA)- Some 30 of the 1,007 rivers in South Kalimantan provincial capital of Banjarmasin had disappeared due to housing construction, the city development activities and waste disposal, an official says.

Only 77 of the 1,007 rivers are now still well-functioning, Muryanta, head of the River and Drainage Agency said here on Tuesday.

In a bid to overcome it, the city administration will remove mud from the rivers and relocate houses from the river banks, he said, without elaborating.

The city administration has allocated 2.1 billion rupiah this year for the dredging of 30 rivers, Muryanta said, and added that money is taken from the budget for relocating the houses from the river banks.

The rivers which would be dredged include those in the areas of A Yani, Veteran, Teluk Dalam, Pekapuran, Pekauman, Belitung, Kuripan, Lulut, Guring and Jafri Zam-zam.

The city administration also planned to use some of the rivers as means of transportation, he said.
