Dubai Customs foils attempt to smuggle-in large haul of heroin

Dubai, Jan 29, 2009 (WAM) - The Airport Operations Unit of Dubai Customs has foiled one of the major drug hauls in the country as personnel of the unit uncovered plot to import into the country through the Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport 16 kilogrammes of high quality heroin carefully hidden in salted almond packed in plastic bags.

The Custom officers suspected the Asian national drug trafficker through his body language at the baggage belt and kept him under surveillance until he collected his luggage and approached the searching point where his luggage was passed under the scanner and upon thorough hand-search the officers discovered a white substance in the almond, which turned out to be heroin following a lab test.

When the visibly-shaken suspect was questioned he admitted to belonging to a network of drug traffickers. He said he was on a mission to deliver the heroin to members of the gang in the UAE.

The suspect and the heroin had been handed-over to the Anti-Narcotics Department of Dubai Police for the necessary action to be taken.

According the Director of the Airport Operations Unit of Dubai Customs, Ali Al-Maq'hawi, his outfit is always ready for those who try to play with the country's security and economy. He said his team had foiled 577 similar attempts through the Dubai Airport in 2008, adding that the figure represents an increase of 8.7% compared to 2007.
