General Women's Union launches UAE's child database

Abu Dhabi, Jan 29, 2009 (WAM) - The General Women's Union launched yesterday the child database project as part of the joint work deal signed with the UNICEF for the period 2008-2010.

The project to develop and maintain the child database of the country is a major national programme launched under the aegis of the General Women's Union with the patronage of Chairperson of the Union HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak. A number of ministries and concerned authorities will participate in the project.

The programme is the fruition of the relentless efforts of the country to improve the life conditions of children at home and abroad and to support childhood. The database will provide a powerful tool to evolve programmes aimed at improving services to support children and their growth.

The project also responds to the national objectives and the international recommendations to evolve pointers of measurement to assess the progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

The database project will compile from the right sources, all the data available in the country on children. The data collected from statistical, health, educational and similar sources will then be merged to form a single database abiding by the internationally accepted developmental rules and standards. This broad and specialised database will help the policy makers and other authorities concerned with childhood, to formulate plans and programmes aimed at protecting children and support their development and growth in the best way.
