Head of the Scientific Committee of the conference, Dr Lee Chee Peng, said the conference would gather exercise scientists, physicians, therapists and coaches to deliberate on exercise medicine, which was increasingly gaining acceptance among Malaysians. "Being the first-time ever conference on exercise medicine, this scientific event is organised with a noble cause and I hope all experts will assemble for the betterment of mankind," he told Bernama. Among the topics which will be covered at the conference, expected to be held from Oct 12 to 14, will be Endocrinology and Exercise, Cancer and Exercise, Metabolic Diseases and Exercise, and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Dr Lee, who is an exercise therapist, said exercise medicine had the potential of treating and preventing four main NCDs, namely hypertension, diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemia through prescription of the right kind of therapy. He said the therapy which had the potential to be an alternative remedy to conventional medicine in preventing NCDs had proven to produce many positive changes to the human body if executed in the right manner. "It is a therapy that has been proven effective through pilot studies and research over 10 years. "There is mounting evidence that exercise has become the most effective form of preventive medicine for people," he said. Meanwhile, Dr Lee said the first ever exercise clinic in Malaysia providing a range of services in helping people to prevent chronic diseases was launched in Bukit Jalil on Dec 27. Raja Yong Sofia Almarhum Sultan Azlan Shah (fourth daughter of the Malaysian Perak state Ruler) launched the clinic. The clinic features a fully computerised exercise prescription protocol to treat and intervene border line NCDs with the right amount of exercise. -- BERNAMA
