Samsung develops world's first 4-gigabit DRAM chip

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korean semiconductor giant Samsung Electronics
Co. said Thursday it has developed the world's first 4-gigabit dynamic random
access memory (DRAM) chip using its 50-nano technology.
The newly developed DDR3 DRAM chip operates at a maximum data processing speed of
1,600 megabits per second, a technical breakthrough that will be used for
personal computers, servers, workstations and data communications systems.
DRAM is a type of memory that stores each bit of data in a separate electronic
component within a circuit.
Samsung expects the new product will lower the level of power consumption to 70
percent of the level for 1-gigabit DRAM.
