EU PLANS TO LAUNCH EASTERN PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE
Baku, 28 January (AzerTAc).The European Union plans to officially launch the Eastern Partnership initiative at a summit to be held on May 7 in Prague, said deputy Chief of Staff of Ukraine`s Presidential Secretariat Andrii Goncharuk.
According to him, President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko is expected to participate
in the summit, as well.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Partnership is a project which was formally proposed to be
initiated by the European Union. It was presented by the foreign minister of Poland
with assistance from Sweden at a the EU`s General Affairs and External Relations
Council in Brussels in 2008.
It is meant to complement the Northern Dimension and the Union for the Mediterranean
by providing an institutionalized forum for discussing visa agreements, free trade
deals and strategic partnership agreements with the EU`s eastern neighbors.
The program`s geographical scope is to consist of Azerbaijan, Belarus Georgia,
Ukraine, Moldova and Armenia.
