M'SIA: ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION SOON
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) will
introduce online voter registration soon aimed at encouraging more people
particularly the young to sign up.
EC chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said online voter registration
would allow those eligible to vote to register using their personal computers.
"It will be implemented once a study on the system is completed. There are
four milion Malaysians eligible to vote who have yet to register with EC. Most
of them are young, in their 20s," he said after an audience with King Tuanku
Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Terengganu (Terengganu Palace) here Thursday.
He was accompanied by EC secretary Ngah Senik.
"We hope that non-governmental organisations (NGO) like Malaysians for Free
and Fair Elections (Mafrel) and political parties will help attract people to
register as voters," he said.
Abdul Aziz said he used the 50 minute audience to brief Tuanku Mizan on the
Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election on Jan 17.
He described the by-election as the best yet and would be used as a
benchmark for future elections.
"Tuanku was happy and asked us to conduct our duties fairly, impartially,
unbiased and professionally."
Abdul Aziz was appointed EC chairman on Dec 31 while Ngah was appointed
secretary on Nov 16 last year.
