Malaysia NGO Also Distributes Aid To Thai Flood Victims
NAKHON SI THAMMARAT (Southern Thailand), Jan 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian NGO Disaster Relief Coalition Organisation has distributed 420 bags of food from Malaysian donors for flood victims here.
Mission chief Dr Din Suhaimi Sidek said the district was picked for the mission on the advice of its district officer as it was among the worst-hit by floods with 27 areas under 2.5 metres of water.
"In cooperation with the Assalam Foundation of Thailand, we distributed about 420 bags of food for the flood victims comprising Muslim and non-Muslim communities here," he told Bernama Saturday.
He said although floods had subsided in some areas, the flood waters were still high at 1.2 metres and the members of the mission had to use sampan to deliver aid to several locations.
He said they were also taken to Kampong Nongwak which was inhabited by non-Muslims and Kampung Klong Mai, whose residents were Muslims, to hand over aid, Friday.
Today, members of the mission were involved in the cleaning up of the Pattanasart private religious school which was badly affected by the floods, before returning home, he added.
The heavy rain due to the monsoon from Jan 1 had caused the worst floods in 50 years in Southern Thailand affecting 1.6 million people in 12 regions, resulting in 36 people dead and one missing until Friday.
