SINGAPORE ATTRACTING MORE MIDEAST VISITORS By Muin Abdul Majid
DUBAI, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- A total of 113,934 Middle East-based travellers visited Singapore during 2008, representing a 16 per cent increase over 2007.
This marked the third year of consecutive double digit growth in the number
of Middle East visitors to the city state, according to Singapore Tourism Board
(STB).
The year 2008 also saw a 34 per cent growth in visitors from Iran and a 25
per cent growth in visitors from the United Arab Emirates.
"Middle East visitors are increasingly discovering Singapore's unique
tourism appeal and I am confident that this trend will continue in 2009," Jason
Ong, STB's area director for the Middle East and Africa, said in remarks made
available here.
The tourism agency said on the back of 2008's positive results, it was
anticipated that 2009 would see further growth in visitors from the region as
new tourism developments were scheduled for completion.
New flights from Riyadh and Kuwait would make access to Singapore even more
convenient, said STB.
