MIDA TO CONFER THE STATUS OF IILS

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- The government has authorised the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), to confer the International Integrated Logistics Services (IILS) status, on existing or new logistics suppliers.

This is to enhance the competitiveness of the Malaysian logistics industry
and to further promote integration into the global supply chain, said MIDA in a
statement Friday.

The IILS was introduced by the government as a means to integrate the
various sectors, and is seen as necessary in allowing shippers to hold lower
inventories and minimise transport, labour and capital costs.

IILS status companies can then apply for customs forwarding agents licenses
which are issued by the Customs Department.

IILS status also allows logistics service providers to carry out all
activities along the logistics supply chain, thereby promoting integration
within the industry.

The IILS is also aimed at consolidation of the logistics sector through such
vehicles as mergers, input of new technology and services with foreign equity
participation.

The government has also urged Malaysian logistics services providers to
modernise and improve efficiency in order to establish the country as a regional
logistics hub, it said.
