DENGUE KILLS 16 IN W JAVA
Bandung, Indonesia, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Dengue fever has killed 16 people in West Java since early this month, prompting the local government to announce a 'dengue alert month,' a health official said.
"The health service and local government of West Java announce a 'dengue fever alert month' which is effective from January to February this year," West Java health office head Dr Hj Alma Lucyati said here on Friday.
She said that January and February are two months when the rainy season peaked so that we called on the people to stay alert over the dengue fever spread during this period.
Lucyati said that one of the alertness forms was to keep the environment clean and to implement the 3m program, namely three acts of eradicating dengue: drain open tanks, cover clean water and dispose unused water containers.
She said that the number of dengue patients in West Java in 2008 stood at 23,157.
Prone areas to dengue spread were the Bandung city (4,233 patients), Bekasi city (2,983) and Depok city.
The West Java health service chief said that the spread of the dengue fever in West Java had not yet been declared as an extraordinary incident.
"Thanks God, up to now, the outbreak of dengue fever in West Java province has not yet reached the extraordinary category," she added.
