LTDL TO SHOWCASE 120 WORLD CLASS RIDERS FROM 35 COUNTRIES
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The most prestigious cycling event in the region, Le Tour de Langkawi (LTDL), will see 120 world class riders from 35 countries representing 20 teams in the Tour to be held from Feb 9-15.
LTdL chief operating officer (COO), Naim Mohamad said the invitation
committee had looked closely at all the applications received to ensure the
annual event would be the most colourful one held internationally.
"We are very pleased to welcome 120 cyclists from all over the world. It
shows that the Tour has become more and more popular worldwide, thanks to the
efforts of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)," he said in a statement here
Friday.
Malaysia will once again top the field with 15 local riders featuring three
teams, Malaysia national team, MCF Continental and Le Tua.
Besides Malaysia, Italy will feature a contingent of 11 riders, followed by
Australia (9), France (8), South Africa, Kazakhstan, Iran, China and Korea (6),
Spain, Switzerland and Japan (5), Ukraine (3), USA, Germany, Austria, Venezuela,
Tunisia, Algeria and Indonesia (2).
There will be one rider from each from Belgium, New-Zealand, Canada,
Netherlands, Slovenia, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, Great-Britain, Moldova,
Colombia, Argentina, Mongolia, Syria and Qatar in the line up.
The youngest rider this year race will be Vadim Izotov, 19, from the
Kazakhstan national team while the oldest rider is Japan's Shinichi Fukushima,
37, from EQA-Meitan-Hompo.
The 14th edition of the Le Tour de Langkawi will feature seven challenging
stages with finishes in Senawang, Melaka, Bangi, Genting Highlands and Shah Alam
prior to the spectacular ending of the Tour with the traditional criterrium on
February 15 in Kuala Lumpur.
The Tour is organized by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF)
with the support of the Malaysian Government via the Ministry of Youth and
Sports and sanctioned by the UCI and Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC).
The 20 teams: Garmin-Slipstream (USA), Ag2r (France), Bbox-Bouygues Telecom
(France), Fuji-Servetto (Spain), Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni (Venezuela), CSF
(Ireland),CSF-Navigare (Ireland) Vorarlberg-Corratec (Austria), ISD (Italy),
Cervelo Test Team (Switzerland), South Africa, Malaysia, China, Iran,
Kazakhstan, MCF, Le Tua, EQA-Meitan-Hompo (Japan), Seoul Cyling (Korea), Doha
Team (Qatar).
