Security Volunteer Shot Dead, Another Injured In Narathiwat Attack

NARATHIWAT, March 4 (Bernama) -- A security volunteer was shot dead by unknown assailants in Sukhirin district here, Friday afternoon while his friend was injured in a terrorist incident in southern Thailand. Spokesman of 4th Army Division, Col Pramote Prom-in said the terrorism incidents which began two days ago have not affected efforts to find peace in southern Thailand. "The peace efforts are moving forward," he told reporters today at a gathering of about 500 local residents in front of the railway station in Resak district here to protest the murder of four family members Thursday. In the incident in Kampung Thammacharen, four family members, including a boy,8, died after the vehicle they were travelling in were shot by unknown assailants. Two others who were also in the vehicle were seriously injured. Resak police chief Col Ruangsak Buadeang said forensic tests conducted on the shells of the M-16 and Ak-47 bullets used in the attack showed they had been used before in attacks on security forces two years ago. The incidents of terrorism in Narathiwat, Pattani and Songkla since two days ago have killed 11 civilians and security personnel. To date, no one have claimed responsibility for these attacks. -- BERNAMA
